An Honest-to-God Spookfish

The Spookfish, photographed above, is Dan Goldberg, and as such he is a member of the only vertebrate species to have evolved the use of mirrors instead of lenses in its eyes. Dan makes hallucinatory poptronica (I’m discarding “electro-pop” in favor of the preceding) with complex dramatic structures, balancing noises and effects to create an internal dialogue. It engages you in an uncommon way that makes each listen surprisingly fulfilling. Find out for yourself: Dan has made his EP ONLINE available for free and I think we can all agree that this name is entirely descriptive of where the EP now is.

Blessed with a varied network of arts associates, it also bears pointing out that Dan has turned Spookfish into an audio/visual collaboration. To accompany a large selection of his songs he commissioned a set of videos, each as quirky and beautiful as the songs that inspired them. This isn’t to say that there’s anything “precious” about the project and I think the selection of videos I’ve put together below should make that clear. The video for “My Stomach” was apparently used in a PETA ad – and shit rarely gets more serious than that – and “Remembering” portrays a touching underwater transcendental interaction of some kind.

Dwight
