The Social Music Record + Tape Club

This weekend, Mike McGonigal, editor of Yeti and my personal purveyor of folkish esoterica, unveiled what I presume to be his very first record label: Socia Music Records. Given the parade of excellent tracks he’s been delivering up via the compilation album that accompanies each issue of Yeti, I would presume some quality releases and his posted schedule bears that expectation out. To give everyone a proper introduction to the label, Mike’s put together an incredible group of contributing musicians for a subscription record ($99) and(/or) tape ($49) club (described below), including Ty Segall and Woven Bones. Among the planned releases, there’s even an expanded vinyl edition of Jeff Mangum’s field recordings for Orange Twin Records in Athens, GA.

Here’s Mike’s schedule for the subscription club:

July 12, 2010: Batch One, Three LPs

CLOUDCRAFT: Debut recordings from Hamish Kilgour (Clean/ Mad Scene/ Bailter Space) + Theo Angell (Hall of Fame/ Theo Angell & the Tabernacle Hillside Singers). This is fun and vibrant stuff, raga wonderland music.

NOAH FOUND GRACE: A compilation of Jamaican gospel music from the ’60s + ’70s, culled largely from the collection of archivist Kevin Nutt.

EVAN MILLER: A new record by the Pac NW-based instrumentalist whose prior solo releases have explored finger-picked guitar playing and lap steel.

October 26, 2010: Batch Two, Three 12″s + Bonus 7″

JACUZZI BOYS: A live album by the finest psychedelic garage-pop band in Miami, FL — to be recorded on the West Coast in late May, 2010.

VALET/ MIRACLES CLUB: A split 12″ with a split personality — both sides are of Honey Owens’ current projects. Beats versus guitar; which will win?

TY SEGALL: Ty has said that he wants to deliver us his “folk record.” Since everything he does is so good, we can’t wait to hear what that sounds like.

THE BATS/ EXPLODE INTO COLORS: Bonus Holiday 7″! Winter wonderland cheer from New Zealand’s Bats and Portland, OR’s Explode Into Colors.

January 18, 2011: Batch Three, Three 12″s

ELIZABETH HARRIS + ILYAS AHMED: Here we have collaborative recordings made in Portland, OR by Elizabeth Harris AKA Grouper and Ilyas Ahmed. Who doesn’t need any stinking AKA’s.

ABNER JAY: A 12″ of previously unreissued recordings assembled by Jay Martin (who oversaw the A.J. releases on Mississippi) and licensed from Abner Jay’s estate.

WOVEN BONES: These Austin, TX-based killers deliver unto us a covers 12″, not-at-all-really in the vein of Cat Power and Rod Stewart.

Torkle pat,
