Antn Hrkwk - Thoroughbred

Antn Hrkwk’s new LP Thoroughbred, birthed in a schizophrenic flood of wax and sound clippings via Life’s Blood – the label’s fifth release and first on vinyl – is a gorgeous mosaic of trimmed, rearranged, and collaged orchestral 80s synth-pop. The label describes it thusly:

“Garret Anton Harkawik is obsessed with the potential of the smallest musical unit; his songs are mosaic mandalas, thoroughly shattered tracks reassembled via Apple’s Final Cut Pro into calculated, impeccably-arranged mantras.”

They aren’t kidding. Though the atmosphere and emotion of the album varies, it’s held together by a bright stable of sound clips and samples, each introduced in a bouncy sort of autonomy and ultimately brought into trance-inducing focus through repetition and novel positioning within individual songs. Thoroughbred is an unabashed sonic experiment, accompanied by an unusually succinct statement to that effect, but one that succeeds musically thanks to its earnest transparency and exceedingly competent execution.
