Panda Beach

Panda on the Beach

Panda Beach is Ebi Nasution of Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia and formerly of the Dutch East Indies as Batavia. Beyond that, before talking at all about the particulars of her music, I feel like it’s pretty important that it be pointed out how effectively she makes 9 out of 10, if not all, professional musicians look super silly. Why? She records great music on a cellphone. I’m sure it’s not even a very good one.

Through her cellphone—don’t forget it—Ebi is able to channel the likes of Sybille Baier and Keren Ann Zeidel, approaching something reminiscent of a particularly lo-fi “nouvelle chanson,” without all the French. Ebi reports some modest displeasure with her locale so the fragility of her music might indicate the same about her, but I take these songs’ very existence—thanks to a cellphone—as more suggestive of strength. They’re songs about the world and its particulars, and the beauty in reconfiguring both.

Here’s a song from her digital EP Last Days Ashore – released via Portland based music blog Nature Film.

Could you please take down this link for the whole panda beach album? We are trying to help her out and sell her records now, so we’d appreciate it if you’d remove the link. The album is now available here:
