Ty Segall & Mikal Cronin - Reverse Shark Attack

Ty Segall and Mikal Cronin have been making music for ages, periodically floating into one another’s orbit and moving out and about a huge variety of California bands. Mikal has been doing good work for democracy in Charlie & the Moonhearts and after a move to San Francisco, Ty played with The Traditional Fools and Sic Alps, though both have been doing amazing solo work for years.

For those that have followed them as individuals or in one or another of their past and present associations, their consistently high quality output will be well known. With such a great track record, a collaboration between the two would be great, right? Damn right. Thanks to Kill Shaman Records their debut recording as a (dynamic) duo, Reverse Shark Attack, is available in time for Christmas. It’s a perfect showcase for the two: decadent psych-grunge soaked in noise, with Mikal’s proclivity for pop and Ty’s garage-weird synthesizing not only the awesome LP I’d expected, but the genuinely unique one we all hope to occasionally find. Here are a couple tracks sent over by Kill Shaman to wet your whistle:

Ty Segall & Mikal Cronin – I Wear Black
Ty Segall & Mikal Cronin – Ramona

This release is particularly exciting to me for other reasons. When I started Royal Rhino, one of the first musicians I spoke with was Mikal Cronin. Shortly afterwards, I bought what must have been Ty Segall’s first release: Horn the Unicorn, a cassette (with hand decorated CD-R) via Wizard Mountain. Since then, they’ve managed to advance – frequently collaborating, both with extensive credits to their name, and gaining a fair share of the recognition they deserve. In celebration of how fucking awesome these guys are, I thought I’d post Mikal’s contribution to the first volume of Build Your Army With Potatoes. It’s beyond a doubt one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard. If every album I put out from this moment on fails and all the past ones never make it into a CD player again, I’ll still be proud of having gotten to release this song in any form. Dig it.

Mikal Cronin – Tethered

Cheers,

Dwight

PS, is that not one of the best album covers you’ve ever seen?
