Church - Song Force Crystal

Tender Loving Empire is a Portland-based multi-media arts collective that produces a pretty varied output including t-shirts, CDs, and books, all hand screenprinted as much as each medium allows. In this way, TLE operates as a record label, publisher, gallery, arts space, and any number of other things, as their own description of themselves suggests they are aware. Church’s Song Force Crystal is a great example of this creative collaboration that they maintain, released this August with the beautiful packaging seen above. Church (a name that TLE calls “un-Google-able”), also of Portland, is a compelling union of psych-folk jam band with a more cerebral noise-pop, moog experimental mentality – an oddly rare combination when presented so starkly. Each of Song Force Crystal’s eight tracks shows this personality to a greater or lesser extent, with gabbling effects and recordings, throbbing guitar, and impressive drumming gradually balancing to carry off a satisfying conclusion.

By way of a preview, here’s some surprisingly well-shot and edited footage from a Church performance of their song “Island” at PDX Pop Now.
