TEETH – See Spaces (Visions of Trees Remix)

Awesome remix of “See Spaces,” from TEETH’s upcoming single on Moshi Moshi by Royal Rhino super friends Visions of Trees. Superlative.

ANTWERP

ANTWERP is a young London producer, sans name, with a growing catalog of songs that explode in frantic mosaics of beats and sound, born in the energy of early techno and brightened by a liberal heap of concrete mash. Each new track is like a tongue in cheek jumble, drawing on field recordings and found sounds, and ultimately embracing their own novelty.

UUU

This debut track of sorts from something (a label?) called UUU – just recently caught touting their summer sampler slated for release this July – sounds like the soundtrack to some obscene Dadaist work out, gradually building layers of synth and percussion into dense collage-pop. Beautiful, energetic, and incredibly promising.

Dwight
French Quarter – It’s Not Just Kissing

It’s Not Just Kissing, the follow-up to French Quarter’s 2008 S/T debut, is a collection of intimately personal pop songs, lyrically honest and skillfully composed. Culled from his enormous back catalog of self produced tour releases, It’s Not Just Kissing evokes the songwriting of Michael Zapruder and The Mountain Goats, the moody pop of the American Analog Set, and far from seeming a set of b-sides or oddities, coheres beautifully into a strong sophomore release.

Coma Cinema – “Only”
Awesome new video for Coma Cinema’s “Only,” off of sophomore LP Stoned Alone.
Cheerios,

MICKEY BROWN

Born of an entirely appropriate-seeming union between MICKEY MICKEY ROURKE and Canadia’s Lester Brown, MICKEY BROWN takes after both parents, making surreal ambient jams that simmer in drone and sparkle with a delicate menagerie of beats, tones, and ancillary noise. The two are well along in their collaboration, with ten-song debut LP VISION QUEST forecast for some time soon.

Dwight
Philip Seymour Hoffman – Semi-Marxist Like Us 7″

The Übermensch behind Philip Seymour Hoffman was kind enough to send over, among other things, a pair of tracks from his upcoming 7″ Semi-Marxist Like Us, the debut physical release from the fmly’s new label venture. The final 7″ will sound a bit different after Phil has a little more time to give the tracks a heavier mix down, but the untouched sounds every bit as good as I could hope for from the final -
as far as his stuff goes, they’re downright catchy.

The Tallest Man on Earth – The Wild Hunt

Earlier this year I had the chance to see The Tallest Man on Earth perform at one of Morgantown, WV’s handful of opportunities to host Charleston, WV’s more regular feature Mountain Stage, West Virginia Public Broadcasting’s gift of prominent musicians to the natives. As far as my taste is concerned, it’s usually a mixed bag, but my taste isn’t the only taste concerned, so it’s a great opportunity for locals to see musicians that the state’s smaller venues wouldn’t normally be able to draw with regularity. That said, this post is in absolutely no way timely: it’s a show I saw months ago with tracks from an album that is thoroughly released. It’s purely for the benefit of anyone that hasn’t already heard or seen the very short Kristian Matsson perform as The Tallest Man on Earth, belting out some of the most poignant and memorable folk I’ve ever known to have broad appeal.

Lush Cola in Fort Collins, CO
Thought I’d return to the normal pace of posting and such with this groovy video of Weed Diamond’s Tim Perry performing a couple of his gorgeous ambient jams as Lush Cola in Fort Collins, CO.

The Queen’s Jew

The Queen’s Jew is the adequately named hand that Royal Rhino Flying is now raising into the air to wave at you inanely, hopeful of praise and good will. The contributors are a cross section of musicians that elevate contemporary music beyond the banal and the indecipherable, all of whom we are or will hopefully be collaborating with more in the future. Take The Queen’s Jew as both an introduction to a fine set of bands, and a label that – although it has nowhere near the technical ability to be a band – strives to excel in its own field. Don’t worry about the name of the compilation (google “the King’s Jew” if you want to scratch the surface and read some really fun academic literature) or of the label, and in conversation please consider dropping the “Records” bit… it serves its purpose, but the name is already hard enough to remember.
